A comprehensive study published in the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register underlines the significant advantages of dual-mobility components. They evaluated data from thousands of patients who underwent THA for osteoarthritis between 2010 and 2019. The results were striking: the adjusted risk for any dislocation within two years was 80% lower for patients who received dual mobility components compared to patients who received standard components with 36 mm femoral heads. Importantly, this reduction in dislocation risk was not at the expense of higher revision surgery rates, thus assuring safety and durability.

My team and I have already published extensively on this (The Use of Dual Mobility Cups in Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty. EFORT Open Review 2019; 4(11)

This latest research paper reinforces what I see in my own practice: dual-mobility components are a game-changer for patients, particularly those with higher dislocation risks due to age, activity level, or anatomical considerations.

Among the primary concerns that one faces when opting for total hip replacement surgery is the possibility of post-surgical dislocation. As an eminent orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee replacements, I always strive to provide the best results and ensure my patients regain their mobility and are pain free. One key aspect of my practice is minimizing the risk of dislocation, a complication that can disrupt recovery and quality of life.

After reading this excellent paper which highlights how I practice evidence based surgery, I’ll explain how my expertise and advanced techniques contribute to a safer and more reliable recovery for my patients.

Understanding the Risk of Dislocation in Hip Replacement

Dislocation typically involves the ball of the hip joint coming out of the socket and often requires medical intervention to correct. It is a complication that will result in pain, reduced mobility, and occasionally the need for revision surgery. Several factors influence the risk of dislocation, including design issues with the implants used to perform the surgery. Of these, one of the most innovative options to reduce the rates of dislocation involves dual-mobility components.

What is a Dual-Mobility Component?

Dual-mobility implants are designed to be even more stable, with two points of articulation: an inner ball that moves within a larger polyethylene socket and an outer articulation where the polyethylene socket moves within the metal shell. This allows for a greater range of motion and reduces the likelihood of the implant dislocating. What that means for patients is an increased confidence in their new hip and a smoother recovery.

Minimizing Dislocation Risk: An Approach

Performing hundreds of hip replacement surgeries, I bring not only years of experience but also an individual approach to every patient. Some key aspects of my process include:

Thorough Preoperative Assessment: I pre-operatively assess each patient’s anatomy, activity level, and general health to make sure that the most appropriate implant design is selected.

Surgical Technique Precision: Success with hip replacement, at least to date, requires surgical technique to be very precise. I incorporate advanced imaging into my surgery, along with minimally invasive techniques, in an attempt to achieve optimally aligned implants.

Proven Technology Adopted: When clinically appropriate, dual-mobility components are incorporated as an element for improved stability and one less concern regarding post-operative precautions.

Comprehensive postoperative care: Recovery doesn’t end in the operating room. I work closely with patients to develop tailored rehabilitation plans that promote healing, strengthen muscles, and reduce the risk of complications.
